The Presidential Planner: Obama Courts Latino Voters
As the debt ceiling stalemate continues, President Obama will take a break from the ongoing deficit negotiations today to focus on the Hispanic community when he addresses the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization.
Immigration, a critical issue for Hispanic voters, is expected to be a topic of the President’s lunchtime remarks at the organization’s annual conference in Washington, D.C. In 2008 Obama promised to make immigration reform a top priority in his first year as president, a promise he has been criticized for not fulfilling.
Both parties are heavily courting the electoral power of the Hispanic vote. The Democratic National Committee’s first advertisement of the 2012 election was a Spanish-language ad released on Friday and the Republican group American Crossroads has also released an ad in Spanish.
Also today, the president will welcome the San Francisco Giants to the White House to honor their 2010 World Series Champion.
