Hispanic group registers 10,000 new voters in NV

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV)- Because of a year-long effort by a National Hispanic policy group, more Hispanics may be voting this November in Nevada. The Hispanic Institute says they have signed up ten thousand voters, the majority of them Hispanics.

It's all part of the Latino Voter Registration Project. It started up in September of 2009 in parts of Vegas where more than 40% of the Latino population resides. They continue to work with anyone who wants to register, but say this year's issues affecting the Hispanic community has prompted many to ask how they can get involved.

When asked how this could affect a race like the one for governor where a candidate is Hispanic, organizers say Latinos are doing their homework before they head to the polls.

"Hispanic voters are sometimes a lot more sophisticated than we give them credit for. Hispanics know that they want to look at the issues and what's important to them which is their children's education, the jobs and the economy that are brought here to the state, and they're looking at the issues and they're no longer voting for someone because of their name," says Artie Blanco, Director for The Hispanic Institute in Nevada.

The Hispanic Institute says they are not done. Their next major task is to get those registered to vote. The Latino Voter Registration Project is intended to be implemented in other Hispanic heavy states.
