Voter ID moves to full assembly for vote

Madison (WQOW) - A bill to change the voting process in Wisconsin moves forward.

In Madison on Tuesday, an assembly committee approved a bill that would require state voters to show a photo ID at the polls.  Republican backers say the measure will help cut down on voter fraud.  Before it was approved, the legislation was expanded to include college student IDs.

"I whole heartedly support the student ID as a form of identification, that is just the ID portion that you are who you say you are, the residency requirement should still remain that you provide where you live," says Kathy Bernier, (R) 68th Assembly District and vice-chair of the Committee on Election and Campaign Reform.

Those opposed to the bill say most student IDs won't qualify even with the change.  There are also concerns a new voter ID law would keep people from voting.

The bill would also move up the date of the fall primary, as well as tighten the requirements to vote absentee. The bill has moved on to the full assembly for action.
