RI Senate committee to vote on voter ID bill
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Rhode Island Senate committee plans a vote on legislation that would require voters to present identification at polling places.
The bill is sponsored by state Sen. Harold Metts, a Democrat from Providence, and is scheduled for a vote Tuesday evening in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
A driver's license, a passport or a voter identification card are among the forms of identification allowed under Metts' proposal. The bill would require the state to make voter ID cards available to citizens at no cost. Those without identification could cast provisional ballots.
If the committee endorses the bill it would move to the full Senate for consideration.
