Latinos In 2011: By The Numbers
September 15th to October 15th marks National Hispanic Heritage Month in the US. Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period.
The month was chosen to include the anniversaries of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile and Belize.
The month is meant to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the U.S. and celebrate Latino cultural heritage.
